Facility Operation

Population:

The inmate numbers for the jail have fluctuated over the past few years with the inmate population growing to as high as maximum capacity for several months in a row in late 2010 through the first quarter of 2011.

Structure:

The jail as it is structured, currently houses both adult male and female inmates in separate housing units. The detention facility has been running almost 100% over the original constructed capacity for the past 10 years.

Sanitary Facilities:

Each pod is equipped with showers sinks and toilet facilities. Inmates are allowed to clean up or shower during the daylight and evening hours prior to lights out each night.

Clothing and Laundry:

Clothing and linens for the inmate beds are washed on a weekly basis. Toiletries are provided as needed.

Meal Preparation and Service:

The kitchen is a full service food operation. The kitchen will serve approximately 48,000 meals annually. All meals are done in accordance with the standards set forth by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. The kitchen is a full service operation that is capable of operating 24 hours a day. During times of emergency of severe weather the Elbert County Sheriffs Office Detentions kitchen has served victims of crime catastrophes and persons held up because of severe weather conditions.
